Alfred University is a private academy in Alfred, New York. It has a student population of approximately 2,000 undergraduates and 300 graduate students. The institution has five schools and colleges, including the New York State Higher of Ceramics, which includes The Inamori School of Engineering and the School of Art and Design.

Alfred Academy was founded as a non-sectarian select school by 7th Twenty-four hours Baptists.^[6] In 1836, Bethuel C. Church, a Seventh Day Baptist, was asked to organize a college in Alfred and began teaching, receiving fiscal assistance from the 7th Solar day Baptist Educational Society with resources, in part, from "Female Educational Societies" of local churches.^[7] Unusual for the time, the school was co-educational, and within its starting time xx years, it also enrolled its start African-American and Native American students.^[6] From its founding as a select school, the institution received a charter as Alfred Academy from the New York Country Board of Regents in 1842. The engineering curriculum includes the study of ceramics and glass, while the School of Art and Design provides art practice instruction in ceramics and drinking glass. The College of Ceramics remains part of the Land University of New York system, while Alfred University also maintains a Higher of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a College of Business in its private sector.

In 1908, the New York State Legislature canonical the formation of the New York College of Agriculture at Alfred Academy. That higher became autonomous in 1941 as a inferior college, and maintains a campus on the reverse side of Master Street in the Village of Alfred. In 1948, the junior higher became a member of the Country University of New York organisation. While a separate and autonomous establishment, Alfred Country College maintains close relations with Alfred University, including an annual Hot Dog Day, which both institutions host in the bound.

The origin of the name "Alfred" is uncertain. Residents of the town and students at the two schools believe that the town received its name in honor of Alfred the Nifty, rex of the Saxons, although the kickoff documented occurrence of this connectedness was in 1881, 73 years after the commencement record of the proper noun being used to describe the geophysical area during assignments past the state legislature. Alfred's four individual colleges are The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, The College of Professional Studies, The Inamori School of Engineering science, and The Graduate Schoolhouse. The Schoolhouse of Business is part of The College of Professional Studies.

The New York State Higher of Ceramics (NYSCC) consists of the School of Art and Design, with its own dean, and four land-supported materials programs cross-organized inside Alfred Academy's Schoolhouse of Engineering. Other laurels societies include Alpha Iota Delta, Beta Gamma Sigma, Delta Mu Delta, Omicron Delta Epsilon, Pi Gamma Mu, Pi Mu Epsilon (the Alpha Iota chapter of New York, chartered in 2002),^[29] Pi Sigma Alpha, Sigma Tau Delta, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Alpha Theta, Phi Sigma Iota, Psi Chi, Keramos, and the Fiscal Direction Association.^[thirty]

Alfred teams participate every bit a fellow member of the National Collegiate Athletic Clan'south Sectionalisation III, with the exception of tall skiing which is governed by the USCSA and the equestrian team which is governed by the IHSA. The Saxons are a member of the Empire 8 Athletic Conference (Empire viii). They compete in the following sports: tall skiing, basketball, cross country, equestrian, football, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field, women's volleyball, and women's softball.^[34]

On July 15, 2020, the Empire 8 Conference postponed all fall sports, but will provide conference championships in those sports in Spring 2021.^[35]
